Therapy Ponies Visit Manor Grange

Resident Petting Pony

We organised a surprise visit for the residents and staff at Manor Grange with visits from Winston and Flicker, miniature Shetland Ponies who visit care settings.

We thought we would do this as a lovely surprise, something which is out of the ordinary and unexpected in the course of a normal day. It is something that we had done pre-Covid pandemic and were unable to do for a while due to restrictions.

The Therapy Ponies provide a positive experience for residents and staff. They create an inclusive and relaxed atmosphere. Everyone adores the ponies, and often emotional memories are brought back, some residents who do not like to participate in daily activities will come along to see the ponies.

Animals are non-judgemental, non-threatening, and do not discriminate, and the effect they have on residents and staff is humbling to see. There are always lots of hugs, kisses and smiles and tears of emotion when residents remember days gone by.

Therapy ponies offer sensory stimulation, which can be particularly beneficial for our residents with sensory impairments or cognitive challenges. The tactile experience of petting and grooming the ponies can enhance sensory awareness, stimulate touch receptors, and provide sensory feedback. The visual and auditory stimuli of the ponies' presence, such as their gentle movements and soft sounds, can also engage the senses and create a calming and therapeutic environment.

We can't wait to welcome back Winston and Flicker back to Manor Grange Care Home soon.
