What is Person-Centred Care?

Person-centred care is a form of professional care that puts the person receiving care at the forefront of everything the carer does. Person-centred care can be given in a hospital, at home or in a care home. It’s about caring for a person beyond their health needs and offering personalised care support to meet their well-being needs, wishes and interests.

To achieve this to a high standard, care home staff will form strong bonds with residents and get to know them as best they can, and by learning about their strengths and abilities, staff can provide accurate and effective care to support residents in living independently and fulfill a quality of life.

Providing Person-Centred Care is one of the key 5 values as stated by the Care Inspectorate which is an independent regulator of health and social care in Scotland;

“Our values drive everything we do, keeping us passionate and focused on person-centred care and our contribution to world-class care. Working together in an energetic and values driven way helps us to achieve our core purpose. We have five key values that we practice and demonstrate, these are:

1. Person-centred: we will put people at the heart of everything we do
2. Fairness: we will act fairly, be transparent and treat people equally
3. Respect: we will be respectful in all that we do
4. Integrity: we will be impartial and act to improve care for the people of Scotland
4. Efficiency: we will provide the best possible quality and public value from our work.

The Principles of Person-Centred Care

  1. Treating everyone with dignity, compassion and respect
  2. To provide comprehensive care, treatment and support
  3. Delivering personalised care and support to meet specific needs
  4. Supporting people to recognise and develop their own strengths and abilities to lead an independent and fulfilling life

The Importance of Person-Centred Care

Person-centred care is about identifying a person’s needs; whether that’s physical or mental in order to provide exceptional care for patients. Providing person-centred care to a patient or resident will help to maintain (or even regain) their sense of self which as a result enhances overall well-being which is just as crucial as achieving health needs. This approach to care enables someone to uphold their independence and identity; a change or progression in health shouldn’t result in a loss of self. Person-centred care is designed to:

  • Improve the quality of the care services
  • Support residents with long-term health conditions, such as Dementia or Parkinson’s
  • Allow patients to receive the personalised care, exactly when they need it
  • Help develop strong relationships with staff
  • Promote independence and self-sufficiency

When it’s time for someone to move to a care home, it is a move that is considered life-changing, however, the goal is to ensure each individual experiences a better way of life while receiving the care they deserve from an experienced care team. In a care home setting residents are surrounded by those who have lived similar lives which helps to encourage social interactions and erase any feelings of isolation or loneliness. Person-centred care is important when it comes to establishing care plans as it enables staff to provide customised care that is regularly reviewed and monitored.
